The Bardic Challenge<\/a> was once again contested at Radburne’s 2nd Anniversary Feast on 19 April 2008.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This poem, written and performed by Somhairle (Sorle) Mac Nicail<\/strong>, was selected as the winning entry.<\/p>\n

The New Fighter (lives far away)<\/h2>\n

With all of my gear, and all of my garb,
\nI start on my four hour journey.
\nWith anticipation high, and hope in my eye,
\nI set off for my first tourney.<\/p>\n

I arrive in Radburne full of zeal,
\nAnd start to unpack my gear.
\nBut lo – I have arrived a little too early –
\nNo-one else is here!<\/p>\n

Others arrive, and I pass inspection
\nIn armour all my own.
\nIn may be old, and second-hand,
\nBut at least its not a loan.<\/p>\n

After months of training long and hard,
\nI hope I do alright.
\nBut the lists go up and what do I see?
\nFirst bout – and I face a knight!<\/p>\n

With sword and shield clenched tight in hand,
\nI stand to face my foe.
\nWe bow to the crown and then “lay on!” –
\nA second later, down I go.<\/p>\n

The next time around, I come out swinging …
\nI feel like I’m really rocking.
\nIt takes me a moment, but then I realise
\nIt’s because he’s only blocking.<\/p>\n

“Have at me!” I yell to the noble sir,
\nIf I’m to learn I know he should.
\nThe next thing I know, I’m on the ground,
\nPlantively calling “good!”<\/p>\n

My ego as battered as my poor old head,
\nI decide to forgo part three.
\nI make my way gingerly to my seat in the shade
\nAnd try not to think “why me?”<\/p>\n

The tourney is double elimination and so
\nI get another turn in the ring.
\nBut I think I know who my next opponent is …
\nDidn’t he used to be king?<\/p>\n

After two rounds of shame, without a win to my name,
\nI pack all my gear from the day.
\nI’m battered and bruised and feeling abused,
\nBut bed is still four hours away!<\/p>\n
